Bachelor of Arts in English
When you choose English as a major, you will follow a curriculum that
involves the study of language, literature, and culture. Topics include
literary history; criticism; forms such as the short story, novel, play, and
poem; and individual authors such as Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, Tennyson,
Browning, George Eliot, Joyce, Twain, and Faulkner. Additional genre and
theme courses are available, including world literature, literature and film,
true crime and the literature of fact, and literature by women.
Linguistics and writing courses include the history and structure of the
English language, advanced composition, and creative writing.
In addition to the courses in the English curriculum, as an English major or
minor, you will have the opportunity to join the writing staffs of campus
publications, to contribute work to a literary magazine (Southwinds), to participate in the
Sigma Tau Delta English honor society, and to attend lectures given by visiting

Prerequisites for the English major are ENGL

and 106.
Six of these hours will also satisfy the general education humanities
requirements for the B.A.
To earn the degree, students are required to take twenty-four hours of
English course work at the 200 and 300 level, including English
202 Critical Approaches to Literature and English
350 Texts and Contexts.
Of these twenty-four hours, a minimum of fifteen hours must be at the 300
level. Only nine hours at the 200 level may count towards fulfilling the major
requirements.
Students are strongly recommended to work closely with their advisors in
planning their major curriculum.
Erin Cotita Undergraduate student in English literature
"I decided to major in English because I wanted to travel overseas and
live long-term in another country. I didn’t know where I wanted to go at the
time, but I knew that with a degree in English, I could probably get a job in
almost any country teaching English at almost any level. Since I already loved
reading and writing, it was an excellent fit for me.
"I hope to be able to continue writing, and in a few years I hope to
move to Russia as an English teacher.
"What I love about the English department here is that, as a student, I
am never lost: my English professors know me by name and are genuinely
interested in my life and helping me succeed. Also, the small class size and
high student to professor ratio helps facilitate class discussion and enables
an atmosphere of learning by interaction."
