English Program

When you choose English as a major, you will follow a curriculum that includes English and American literature, as well as linguistics and advanced writing.

The English curriculum involves the study of language, literature, and culture. Topics include literary history; criticism; forms such as the short story, novel, play, and poem; and individual authors such as Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, Tennyson, Browning, George Eliot, Joyce, Twain, and Faulkner. Additional genre and theme courses are available, including world literature, literature and film, science and literature, true crime and the literature of fact, literature by women, and fantasy literature. Linguistics and writing courses include the history and structure of the English language, advanced composition, and creative writing.

In addition to the courses in English curriculum, as an English major you will have the opportunity to join the writing staffs of campus publications, to contribute work to a literary magazine (Southwinds), and the Sigma Tau Delta honor society, and to attend lectures given by visiting scholars and writers.

Teacher Education Program

The teacher education program is a structured educational strategy that integrates classroom studies with learning through productive work experiences in a field related to a student’s academic or career goals. It provides progressive experiences in integrating theory and practice.

If you are interested in teaching English, you may enter the Teacher Education Program. The purpose of the program is to satisfy the continuing need for well qualified teachers in schools of Missouri and to provide a second career option for graduates.

You may earn a B. A. in English from Missouri S&T and a certificate to teach in the schools of Missouri. The program can be completed in four academic years, although you may elect to attend summer sessions if you wish to carry lighter course loads during the regular academic semesters. Student teaching is arranged with Rolla area public schools within 30 miles of the campus.

If you are enrolled in other fields at Missouri S&T you also have the opportunity for a second career by earning an English degree and certification through the Teacher Education Program. You should consult with the coordinator of the Teacher Education Program early in your academic career in order to plan curricula that will satisfy all requirements. You must have at least 22 ACT, 265 C-BASE, PRAXIS, and maintain at least a 2.5 GPA. You also must submit a portfolio, complete a background check and fingerprinting and complete the course listed.

IN THE WORDS OF ...

Kassi Mace
Undergraduate Student in English Education

“There were a lot of factors that went into my decision to major in English. I have always enjoyed reading and really liked some of the English classes I have taken in the past. In high school, my teachers always told me I was good at writing papers. When it came time to choose a major, English was something that was both enjoyable and came naturally for me.

“Missouri S&T has a great English program. We have some really great professors who are very knowledgeable and passionate about their teaching. They are very understanding and willing to help. Also, because Missouri S&T is primarily an engineering school, the class sizes in the English education courses tend to be small, which really allows the professors to get to know the students and better assist them throughout the program.

“Most of the courses I have taken so far have been extremely enjoyable and interesting. The best courses were ones that allowed us to have some creative freedom in our assignments. Not only were these types of courses more fun, but they were also very useful.

“Some people think that Missouri S&T is only an engineering school and feel that they should go to another school for an English program, but this is certainly not true. The professors and class sizes on this campus are ideal. Missouri S&T is a prestigious school, and getting an English degree here just proves that you were able to succeed and persevere in a challenging environment.”
